Define the task that will bring users back.
Turn your app idea into a clear use case: why will someone open it, and what will they accomplish? Appointment tracking, field reporting and membership services each have different requirements. Consider whether a mobile website could meet the same need. Features such as notifications, camera access and offline use are important factors in that decision.
Choose platforms around your audience.
Do not base your choice of iOS or Android solely on personal preference. Consider your users’ devices, your organisation’s device policy and the hardware features you need. When comparing shared development with platform-specific approaches, weigh up integrations, maintenance and design requirements together. Each approach has its own project requirements; no single method is best for every app.
Deliver a complete core journey in the first release.
Plan registration, sign-in, the main task and confirmation as one connected journey. Account for lost connections, missing data and denied permissions. An appointment app, for example, may need cancellation and rescheduling flows as well as a calendar. Focus on helping users complete their task, rather than on the number of screens.
Prepare for the app stores early.
Assign responsibility for account ownership, app descriptions, screenshots and reviewer access. Apple recommends testing the app and preparing the information needed for review before submission. Do not assume development completion and app store publication will happen on the same date. Check the relevant store’s official guidance for current requirements before launch. Include maintenance and measurement in your launch plan.
Decide how you will monitor issues after launch, collect feedback and manage releases. Downloads may not be the most useful measure of success; completed appointments or transactions could matter more. Create an ongoing plan for operating system updates, backend services and new features.
Before you begin: a checklist
- Is the app’s main use case clearly defined?
- Have you agreed on iOS and Android coverage?
- Have you considered connection failures and denied permissions?
- Are app store accounts and content responsibilities assigned?
- How will maintenance and user feedback be managed?
